Reality or Not?

Dedication: To T. (#1), my very good friend who has a real phobia about spiders. Unfortunately, she should have not let me know as now I tease her mercilessly.

I had been drinking since getting off work last night, no maybe the night before. Fuck, I don't remember.  I know that somewhere between the time I started and today, the sun did go down and I ended up in this flea bag roach motel.  I lifted the covers and noted that I was bare butt naked.  Looking around, I could see no signs of my clothes.

I tried to get out of bed but as soon as I lifted my head, the room began to spin and I immediately lay back down.  My stomach churned and I knew that if I made one more move, everything that I had been drinking would come spewing forth.  I lay quietly with my eyes shut.

I must have dosed back off because when I opened my eyes again, the room was cast in shadows.  Looking up at the ceiling, I could see a line of shadows sprayed in front of my eyes.  The more I stared at the shadows, the more my mind began to realize it was moving insidiously across the ceiling.

I stared hard, not daring to take a deep breath.  I watched and waited.  Finally, the shadowy line broke and thousands of tiny assed spiders raced sporadically over the ceiling.  My heart raced, my palms became sweaty but I could not move an inch.

I watched in fear to see what was going to happen.  As I kept my eyes glued to the ceiling, each of the spiders shot forth a thin line of silk and began their decent to my level.  I lay still, never moving, hoping they would pass me by.  That was not to be.  Thousands upon thousands of those fucking spiders dropped onto me, covering me completely.  I began yelling, no screaming, as I felt their legs running up and down my body.  I was so frightened I must have passed out.

I did not know how long I was out but as I awakened, I looked around me to see if I was safe.  Everywhere I looked, I saw nothing but stainless steel and white.  It was so pristine clean it made my eyes water.  I tried to rise up and realized I was strapped to a bed in a straitjacket.  I called out.  Footsteps approached as someone finally heard me.

I listened, as they get closer.  They were talking about someone who was rushed in with a severe case of alcohol withdrawal, including uncontrollable hallucinations.  I heard them say that the person swore that spiders were consuming them.  I realized it is me they were talking about.

My heart slowed down as finally I could breathe a sigh of relief that the spiders really did not exist.  I shut my eyes and opened them slowly.  Looking up at the soft light on the ceiling, I saw a single dot.  It began to move until it was directly over me.  As before, a thin trail of silk allowed the spider to descend onto my chest.  It had started all over again as I screamed in panic.

The End
